Ex-daily features editor celebrates 50th edition of independent magazine

A former regional daily features editor has celebrated the 50th edition of her lifestyle magazine being released.

Kathryn Armstrong, who worked for the Teesside Gazette, founded Luxe magazine with publisher Chris March, and directors Lisa Anderson and Debi Coldwell, after Trinity Mirror’s upmarket monthly North-East Exclusive, which Kathryn edited, was closed in 2009.

The first edition of Luxe was produced from a dining room table, but now its owner Remember Media employs four journalists as part of the company’s 11-strong team, which includes sales and design roles.

The 50th edition of the bi-monthly magazine features actor Kenny Doughty, star of Northumberland-based TV crime series Vera.

Other cover interviewees have included Ant & Dec, Lauren Laverne, George Clarke, Jeff Stelling, the Duchess of Northumberland, Robson Green, Dave Stewart and Sarah Millican.

The title is distributed free to 22,000 homes and retails at £5 or on subscription.

Kathryn, who serves as editorial director, said: “Our 50th magazine is a real milestone for Remember Media. We’re a luxury niche magazine which is thriving because we believe in quality writing, we know our audience and quite simply, we want to make a magazine that’s gorgeous to look at and is worth taking the time to sit back and read.

“We’re proud to have taken on graduates from local universities to add to our team of journalists and they have brought with them digital skills to add to what we do in print. In addition, we also work with a team of valued freelance journalists.

“We’ve established Luxe online using content from the magazine and original material to bridge the gap between the print magazine’s publication dates.”

Seem to recall there were many comments on here when Luxe launched by naysayers predicting it wouldn’t last two minutes. Well, this is a magazine that’s remained, as its front strap proclaims, ‘regional, relevant and entertaining’. Not an easy feat. Well done Kathryn, Chris and the whole team. Here’s to the 100th!

Nice-looking publication. Someone knows what they’re doing.
