Journalists being denied court lists ‘absolutely should not happen’ says No 10

Downing Street says instances of journalists being denied access to court lists “absolutely should not happen”.

The Courts and Tribunal Service has reminded staff of their responsibilities after incidents being reported of officials withholding lists because of data protection rules.

According to the News Media Association, Prime Minister Theresa May has now backed journalists facing such incidents in their line of work.

The NMA has quoted her official spokesman as having discussed the issue with the Press Association.

Speaking to PA, he said: “That absolutely should not happen. Court lists will continue to be fully available to members of the press.

“The Court Service has a clear protocol that allows journalists to obtain court listings. Guidance is given to all staff and it remains unaffected by GDPR rules.

“The Courts and Tribunal Service has reminded staff of their responsibilities to prevent any repeat of these incidents.”
