Editor ‘wouldn’t run P1 photo of dying football boss now’

A daily editor says he would not now publish a front page image of a dying football manager used by his newspaper the 1980s – describing it as “too intrusive”.

Daily Record editor Murray Foote has discussed how he would cover the death of former Scotland national team boss Jock Stein differently, if the tragedy had occurred today.

Stein suffered a fatal heart attack at the end of a match between Wales and Scotland on 10 September 1985, and the following day’s edition od the Glasgow-based paper carried images of the dying man on its front page.

But Murray spoke out against the idea of running such photographs now in a video piece accompanying an article about the Record’s coverage of the story, which forms part of a series being run by the paper called ‘How The Record Reported’.

Jock Stein

Said Murray: “The picture of Jock not quite staring down the lens probably would be considered too intrusive to be used on the front page.”

He added: “When you’re looking at someone’s face and their eyes are rolling in the back of their head, it does seem somewhat intrusive and I’m not sure we’d do that now. In fact, I really think we probably wouldn’t do that now.”

Murray went on to discuss how the Record might cover such a story online now.

He said: “I think the way the world has changed with the advent in particular of social media, we have to be very careful with how we present stories.”

“If it was happening in real time and we had the picture, the story would be published, but then we’d almost certainly row back when we realised Jock had passed away. We would say that’s too much.”

“The reality is now that social media tells us instantaneously when we’ve gone too far. There are people that are upset, outraged and offended by pretty much anything we do.

“But the gauge for me is when on social media normal, sensible people that understand the way the world works, and are not just there to be professionally offended, complain. It gives you food for thought.”

I think it was pretty questionable at the time, never mind now.

of course if he had been thinking of someone else, like Stein’s family, instead of selfishly using his “scoop” picture he would never have done it. I expect he has grown up now. Too often editors can only see their gain, not someone else’s loss. Plenty of others have been guilty in the past.
