A daily newspaper journalist known as a “great news reporter with an unrivalled range of contacts” has died aged 76.

Tributes have been paid to Philip Falle, left, who spent three decades with the Jersey Evening Post.

During his time with the JEP, Philip served in roles including political correspondent and special correspondent.

His death prompted tributes from fellow journalists and political figures on the island.

Former JEP editor Chris Bright said: “Phil Falle was a great news reporter with an unrivalled range of contacts, an independent spirit and a deep knowledge of both Jersey’s modern life and its historic roots.

“For three decades, he brought in an unbroken succession of exclusive stories on every subject under the Jersey sun, not least during his time as our universally respected political correspondent.

“Phil’s professionalism and principled approach were an inspiration to generations of journalists who came after him. He loved his island and was rightly, if quietly, proud of his contribution to the newspaper’s central role in keeping the community informed and holding the powerful to account.”

Former Jersey Bailiff and External Relations Minister Sir Philip Bailhache spoke of his “innate sense of fairness”.

He said: “Phil Falle was a journalist of the highest calibre; astute, persistent and forthright, but also honourable and trustworthy. He had a deep understanding of politics and public life in Jersey. Occasionally he made mistakes, but never cynically or deliberately. He was a fair and just man.”

Former Chief Minister and JEP colleague Frank Walker added: “I was almost in awe of his ability to unearth the big stories of the day. He was someone who could get right to the heart of stories that would never otherwise have seen the light of day.

“He was also a fearless commentator on the States and the political environment of Jersey, and while in my own career as a politician I didn’t necessarily always agree with him, I couldn’t help but admire his journalistic integrity. I was always able to talk to him off the record with complete trust, which he never betrayed.”

Philip died on Tuesday 21 July at Jersey Hospice.
