Daily makes late night switch to splash on soccer survival

A football team’s Premier League survival prompted a late night change to a regional daily’s front page.

The Huddersfield Daily Examiner splashed this morning on confirmation that Huddersfield Town will play in England’s top flight next season.

Town’s status was secured after they managed a 1-1 draw away at Chelsea last night.

This season was the first time in 45 years that the club had played at England’s highest level, following their promotion from the second tier Championship last year.

Hudders up

Examiner editor Wayne Ankers told HTFP: “We always knew we were facing the prospect of Town securing survival last night despite all the pundits continually writing them off and the majority in Huddersfield thinking it would go down to the last day. Our deadline is usually 9pm but we extended it to 10:30pm to make sure we could cover the game in detail anyway.

“As we were approaching the last 15 minutes we decided to draw up a new splash as it was looking more and more likely to happen.

“And when that final whistle went it was all hands on deck to make sure we had a strong front page celebrating the incredible achievements of the club as well as the normal back and inside spread on the match.

“Thankfully it all went smoothly – and we have now started work on a picture special for tomorrow and a 24-page supplement for next week.”

Come on, HTFP, this really isn’t a story. Paper makes late change to feature best local story? I know we live in an age when ‘concept fronts’ are signed off by 4pm, but even so, any decent sub has done this countless times. And let’s be honest, surely the Examiner had a Plan A and a Plan B for its front, depending on how events at Stamford Bridge panned out.

Beg to differ, one-time sub. Late edition changes for breaking news are something HTFP has always covered and that won’t be changing anytime soon.
