Daily honours journalists lost in football air crash which killed 23

A regional daily has remembered a sporting tragedy which claimed the lives of two journalists who worked on the newspaper.

The Manchester Evening News marked the 60th anniversary of the Munich air disaster, which killed 23 people on 6 February 1958.

Among the fatalities were 11 players and members of staff from Manchester United Football Club, as well as eight journalists, who were returning from the team’s 3-3 European Cup draw against Red Star Belgrade in what was then Yugoslavia.

Those who perished also included MEN reporter Tom Jackson and former sports editor Archie Ledbrooke, who was working for the Daily Mirror at the time of his death.

MEN Munich

In its coverage of the disaster’s anniversary, the MEN has published Tom’s final match report filed from Belgrade.

A 16-page tribute supplement was also included in today’s edition.

Editor-in-chief Rob Irvine told HTFP: “The tragedy in Munich cut so many lives short, among them our reporter Tom Jackson and former sports editor Archie Ledbrooke.

“We have included Tom’s final match report in our coverage today. He, Archie, and the six other journalists who died are very much in our thoughts. We also pay tribute to all the victims, including the eight players who died.

“This is a story of tragedy and remarkable resilience for a club that could have gone under. In May we will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of United’s victory in the European Cup, just 10 years after Munich.”
