Daily turns yellow in honour of cycling triumph

A daily newspaper turned its masthead yellow to celebrate cyclist Geraint Thomas winning the Tour de France.

The Western Mail went yellow in tribute to Thomas, who won the famous yellow jersey worn by the winner of the sport’s most famous race.

The Cardiff-based Mail also ran a special eight-page supplement in tribute to Thomas, who was born in the Welsh capital, in yesterday’s edition.

Six pages of coverage were also found inside the Mail, with further reaction in its sport supplement.

In a piece for the Mail’s sister website Wales Online, Media Wales editor-in-chief praised Thomas’s “staggering humility” in victory.

He wrote: “It’s not in his character to boast, to make outrageous demands, or behave like a prima donna. But let’s be clear about this. Thomas now has a palmares that few riders in the history of cycling can hold a candle to. Not through a single strength, but from a mind-blowing level of consistency across all disciplines of the sport.

“Can we call him the greatest Grand Tour rider of his generation? Not by a long chalk. Are there others with better records in the classics? Plenty. Do others have more medals from the track? Some do. Is he the best climber in the world? Time trialist? A firm no to both.

“And yet very few are better than him at any of them. Geraint Thomas can’t just do all these things. He’s world-class at them. All of them.”
