City arts newspaper to close after three years in business

A city’s arts and entertainment newspaper is set to cease publication after three years in business.

Leicester-based publication Great Central has announced that November’s will be its last print issue, with its companion website closing shortly after.

The magazine’s closure was revealed in a post on Great Central’s website, with editor-in-chief John Helps saying the paper had been unable to secure the financial support required to keep going.

In the announcement, John shared his hope that someone else would be able to find a “sustainable model” to cover Leicester’s creative community in print in future.

He wrote: “It’s with some sadness that we have decided that November’s issue of Great Central will be its last, with the website closing shortly after.

“While we’re proud to have created something which quickly became beloved by its readers and the city’s creative community we failed to create something that could secure the financial support it needed to continue.

“Having begged and borrowed to make it through our first three years, we’ve made the decision to cease publication from this point forwards.

“We need to extend an enormous thank you to everyone who believed in what we were doing – from the writers, photographers, editors and designers who put everything together, to the advertisers who invested in it and our Patreon and GoFundMe backers who personally contributed to it’s continuation.”

John added: “Leicester is a brilliant city that deserves to have more people shout about the great things that happen here. We hope someone takes up the gauntlet and can find a sustainable model to do that in print.”
