Weekly supplement celebrates 20 years since football club’s cup run

A weekly newspaper marked 20 years since the magical cup run of a football club on its patch.

The Derbyshire Times produced a special supplement celebrating two decades since Chesterfield FC reached the semi-finals of the FA Cup.

Chesterfield, who played in English football’s third tier at the time, drew 3-3 with Premier League club Middlesbrough at a semi-final held on neutral territory at Manchester United’s Old Trafford stadium on 13 April of that year.

A replay at Sheffield Wednesday’s Hillsborough ground nine days later saw Middlesbrough beat of their lower league rivals to reach the final of the historic competition, which they lost to Chelsea at Wembley.

Chesterfield supplement

Derbyshire Times head of sport Stephen Thirkill said: “Chesterfield’s FA Cup heroics back in 1997 really captured the imagination of the whole nation and summed up why sport and the FA Cup is so magical.

“Football fans of all different clubs will still remember today watching that game and cheering the brave underdog on as they looked to make sporting history.

“The eyes of the world really were on Spireites that day and it has been a pleasure celebrating Chesterfield’s magnificent achievement in the pages of DT this week.

“The memories of those involved on the day really makes for fascinating reading. Like the 1997 FA Cup team, the DT sports desk is made of up some very talented people who have put a lot of effort into bringing the full drama and emotion of the game back to life.

“We hope our readers enjoy our content. And lets hope that in 30 years time we may be able to do a fresh supplement on yet another great Chesterfield cup run.”

With all due respect – being a Chesterfield-bred lad, I would have thought that this wasn’t good timing: as the club is about to be relegated. Why not leave it to the 21st anniversary when, hopefully, the Spireites are pushing for promotion and there is a more positive atmosphere in the town?
