Weekly marks 150th anniversary by reprinting first edition

A weekly newspaper marked its 150th anniversary by reprinting its first ever edition.

The Ross Gazette printed the memento, a reproduction from 3 January 1867, as part of its celebrations.

The Gazette, owned by Tindle Newspapers, also ran a 150th anniversary logo competition to mark the milestone in conjunction with primary schools across its patch in Ross-on-Wye, Herefordshire.

The winning design, created by schoolboy Eben Harris, will be used on the newspaper’s front page for the duration of 2017.

General Manager, Charlotte Reynolds, said: “I can remember as a little girl having to sit on the floor to read the Ross Gazette as it was too big to hold the paper in my lap, as it was broadsheet back then. My family has always purchased the newspaper, and I continued the tradition when I moved home.

“I was then employed at the paper, and have now progressed to the manager, which I am extremely proud of. When I go through the Gazette’s archive, it is a joy to spot myself in the paper, whether it is a photo from my school days or from the drama group I was part of. I guess it really is true that local newspapers are with you all the way.

“I am immensely proud to be the manager of the Ross Gazette, and to be at the helm during such a special year. The paper is an established part of Ross-on-Wye and I would like to thank all our readers and advertisers for their continued support of the Ross Gazette.”

Editor Jo Scrivin added: “When I joined the paper in 2000 thoughts of the 150th anniversary still seemed very distant, now the year has arrived and I am really proud to be the editor of such a long standing local newspaper which is still at the heart of the community.”
