A train has been given a new name thanks to a regional daily’s readers.
Virgin Trains has unveiled the ‘Flying Scouseman’ following a competition in the Liverpool Echo to mark the rail operator’s 20th anniversary.
The winning name, voted for by Echo readers, was chosen by 24-year-old Michael Dally, who saw the competition on Facebook.
Michael and Echo editor Alastair Machray unveiled the new nameplate, which features the Echo’s logo, at Liverpool Lime Street railway station.
Other shortlisted suggestions for the new name included Mighty Mersey, Pride of Liverpool, Merseyside Express and Liver Bird.
Michael told the Echo: “I was just flicking through Facebook when I saw the competition.
“The name just randomly came into my head when I was just looking at the other names. I just thought it was unique and original.
“I was shocked when I found out I’d won – it’s mad seeing it on the train. Everyone’s made up I’ve won and has said it’s a good name.”
Good idea, Post & Echo. And a very good name, Michael.
But is it applied to a TRAIN (eg the 10.15 from Lime Street to Euston) or is a single LOCOMOTIVE ?
I know the Flying Scotsman name applied to one of each, but it’s the only example of this, as far as I know.
I think we railway enthusiasts should be told . . .
