Regional daily to make 30,000 photos available on website

A regional daily is set to make an archive of more than 30,000 photographs available on its website.

The Argus, Brighton, says the plan will include all surviving images taken between 1929 and 1992.

The archive’s digital transfer was unveiled at a launch event on Friday afternoon, with hundreds of the images put on public display at an exhibition held at Brighton’s Grand Hotel.

The launch of the campaign was unveiled on the front page of Friday’s edition, which also featured a blue and white masthead in honour of local football team Brighton & Hove Albion – who have recently been promoted to the Premier League.

The launch was also held in order to raise money for local children’s charity Rockinghorse and The Argus Appeal.

Speaking ahead of the launch, editor Arron Hendy said: “It will be a great day at The Grand. Visitors are able to come down and use the computers to look up moments in history that they remember.

“They’ll be able to look at memorable sport events and any times that they, their relatives and friends have been in The Argus.

“Andy Garth and his team at Brighton and Hove Stuff and the team at The Keep have done us all a great service by archiving the pictures so that we can all look at them at the event and through our website afterwards.”

A wonderful archive, though as a former Argus man I remember thousands of glass plate negatives being shovelled into a skip and several hard copy library clear outs which resulted in thousands of prints being taken to the tip.
