Regional daily launches million pound bid to help veterans

A regional daily has launched a bid to raise a million pounds for a care home for war veterans.

The Manchester Evening News is bidding to raise the cash for Broughton House, in Salford, with its Million Pound Salute appeal.

The home is bidding to raise a total of £14m to transform itself into a care village for veterans of all conflicts.

Around 20pc of the UK’s 2.6m veterans live in the North-West of England, while a quarter of all armed forces personnel are recruited from the same region.

MEN veterans

Over the coming weeks and months the MEN will be highlighting the many stories and issues surrounding Broughton House and veterans’ care.

A front page story launching the campaign states: “Quietly and without fanfare, Broughton House has looked after those who’ve risked their lives to keep us safe for 101 years. A loving final refuge for heroes unique to Greater Manchester and the North-West.

“Now the care home in Salford needs your help. The Manchester Evening News is launching a major new campaign to raise £1m for Broughton House to protect and enhance the vital services the home offers for generations to come.

“The home is about to be transformed into a £14m care village for veterans of conflicts past and present – to tend to physical as well as mental wounds. Our Million Pound Salute campaign, launched ahead of Remembrance Sunday, aims to raise £1m to help make that vision become a reality.

“Although a huge proportion of armed services personnel come from the North-West, a gaping north-south divide exists in terms of dedicated veterans’ care.

“MEN readers have proved their generosity so many times in the past. Now we urge you to rally round once more to help those who have dedicated their lives to protect our freedoms. Every penny will count.”
