Buckethead beats May to bag weekly’s ‘Being of the Year’ prize

He may not have unseated Theresa May at the General Election, but Lord Buckethead has won the rematch after beating her to his local newspaper’s ‘Being of the Year’ award.

The Maidenhead Advertiser has bestowed the honour upon the mysterious mascot, who stood against the Prime Minister in her Maidenhead constituency in June.

Lord Buckethead won 249 votes thanks to policies including nationalising Adele and legalising the hunting of fox hunters.

A picture of him at the Maidenhead count, taken by Windsor Express photographer Ian Longthorne, was later shortlisted in the Best Election Photo category in the Royal Rota photography competition.

Advertiser editor Martin Trepte said: “The idea came about following the row on social media over whether President Trump should be Time Magazine’s Person of the Year.

“Lord Buckethead was suggested as an alternative and, as he’d brought so much fun to this year’s election campaign when he stood against Theresa May, we decided we’d name him Advertiser Person of the Year.

“But as he’s an intergalactic spacelord we felt ‘Being of the Year’ was probably more appropriate. Basically, it was a bit of fun in the run up to Christmas.”

Of his win, Lord Buckethead posted on his official Twitter account: “I am delighted to accept the first ever ‘Being Of The Year’ award from the Maidenhead Advertiser. Stick that in your hair and light it, Trumpy.”
