Local newspaper wins small business award 15 months after launch

A local newspaper launched 15 months ago has been recognised by business chiefs for its “impressive growth”.

The Bridlington Echo won Best Small Business title at the Yorkshire Coast Business Awards, beating off 27 competitors in the process.

The Echo is owned by print distribution company the BKR Group and was initially edited by former Scarborough News sub-editor Pete Spence, who previously set up the Scarborough Review before selling it on to new owners.

Simon Kench was appointed editor a year ago after founding editor Pete left to set up the Focus magazine.

Simon worked as a photographer for Johnston Press weekly the Bridlington Free Press for 14 years, and spent a further 13 years freelancing for the Hull Daily Mail after JP ended his contract.

The judges praised the monthly Echo for “impressive growth within a contracting market supported by revenue from local advertising”, and also noted the ethos of providing positive local news.

Said Simon: “The Echo has now become a regular and trusted part of the local media. We have received so many positive comments from our readers and advertisers, the only complaints we have received is that the papers have run out.”

He added: “The Echo is all about grassroots journalism. We have a positive approach to news and feel that there is enough doom and gloom which is readily available on TV news and social media platforms.”

Congratulations Bridlington Echo, having read the paper it is a credit to you and the local area. Keep up the good work and I wish you all the success for the future. Show the ‘big boys’ how it’s done!
