Journalist takes part in World Coal Carrying Championships

A regional daily journalist has vowed to return after competing in the World Coal Carrying Championships.

Lauren Ballinger, executive editor at the Huddersfield Daily Examiner, took part in the traditional Yorkshire race – which sees competitors carry a 20kg bag of coal across a 1,012 metre course.

Lauren, 36, managed to finish 11th from 23 runners in the second heat of the women’s race, recording a seven minute finish on Bank Holiday Monday.

She required help to lift the bag on to her shoulders from husband Liam, 33, who took part in the men’s race.

Lauren told the Examiner: “The weight of the bag really presses into your shoulders and your mind goes blank as you focus on finishing.

“I did manage a sprint finish. Some people started off hell for leather; pacing yourself is very difficult. If you don’t, you burn out.

“We put blood, sweat and tears into this. I am proud of myself because I never thought I could do it.”

When asked if she would return, Lauren added: “I would like to do it again – I would like to get top 10. It depends on Liam as I can’t lift the coal onto my shoulders on my own. I can’t get it above my head.”
