Journalism student set for trip of a lifetime as Lions ambassador

Callum KerrA journalism student is set to undertake the sporting trip of a lifetime serving as an ambassador for the British & Irish Lions rugby union team.

Callum Kerr, left, who studies sports journalism at the University of the West of Scotland, was selected for the post which will see him travel to New Zealand in a fortnight.

To win the role, Callum attended a full day interview process in London and will now fly across the world with seven other ambassadors from England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales – the four nations from which Lions players are drawn.

While there, they will attend rugby games, visit local rugby clubs and carry our night time engagements.

Callum, 20, told the Carrick Herald: “I can’t wait to go, just to even see that part of the world and we’ll be there for just under three weeks and travelling the north side of the island.

“I will be going to see local teams to learn about grassroots and attend dinners at night to speak about what I have learned from being there.

“We will be visiting rugby museums as well to soak in the culture and try and build a legacy around there and see what can be taken and used to benefit Scotland.”

He added: “Being a sports journalism student, I’m looking forward to building contacts and meeting wonderful people from across the world.

“I work for Glasgow Warriors as a media communications intern and to do this for Scotland, it is a huge honour.”
