Friday Funnies: Regional news site falls for sex toy footballer spoof

Yermas Dildo

Plenty of daft rumours fly about in the world of football come transfer deadline day, but one regional news website managed to fall for speculation about a man named after a sex toy.

Get Reading included a tweet about the possibility of prolific Cameroonian striker ‘Yermas Dildo’ moving to Reading FC on its deadline day live blog.

A Twitter account set up for the fictional Dildo claims he has scored 76 goals in 93 games and is “deadly in the box”.

Fans quick on the uptake suggested the potential new player would be a “great performer on a wet pitch” and a “top drawer signing”.

One Reading supporter on the social networking site said Get Reading was “having a ‘mare”.

In response, its official account tweeted back: “We’ll say. Apologies. It’s given you all a good laugh though, some very inventive replies.”

Seems more and more newspapers are falling foul of ‘fake news’ and looking daft in the process. Perhaps an argument to go back to old fashioned virtues like checking stories before publishing and not sweeping social media sites for cheap and quick articles for the easy web hits?
