Editorial support roles at risk in planned publisher cutbacks

MNA-MediaThree editorial jobs are under threat as part of proposed cutbacks by an independent publisher.

The Midland News Association says three editorial support staff across the group are at risk as a result of efficiency savings.

The MNA publishes regional dailies the Express & Star, in Wolverhampton, and the Shropshire Star. It also owns a number of weekly titles across the West Midlands and English-Welsh borders.

It is understood the roles affected are not journalism roles.

An MNA spokesman said: “The company is currently in consultation with three staff regarding potential redundancies for editorial support roles across the MNA portfolio.

“The consultations are on an individual basis in areas where we are looking to make efficiencies.”

This time last year the company announced a round of cutbacks which saw around 15 jobs put at risk.

Production, sub-editing and newsdesk staff were affected by the changes, which also saw the Shropshire Star revert from four editions to three.

“Editorial support?” So, admin staff then? And with the utmost respect to those affected (and I really do mean that), their pay is unlikely to be the big bucks of the bosses. Could the company not make significantly more saving by axing a director?

The support staff will no doubt have been doing their jobs to the best of their ability, which cannot be said for bosses whose decisions and short sightedness allowed this situation to develop in the first place.
