Daily readers get chance to quiz May over Brexit

A daily newspaper’s readers are being invited to quiz Theresa May over Brexit.

The Irish News is urging readers to send in their questions for the Prime Minister, who has agreed to answer six points on the issue from the Belfast-based title.

The News splashed on the initiative yesterday, and responses to questions alongside expert commentary and analysis will appear in The paper later this week.

Editor Noel Doran said it would make a “hugely significant contribution to the wider debate” on Brexit and the Irish border.

He added: “Brexit is an issue of paramount concern to people on both sides of the Irish border, and as a newspaper we have directly questioned almost every aspect of the British government’s performance since the EU referendum.

“As so many key issues need to be clarified, we very much welcome the decision by Theresa May to directly respond to queries from our readers.”

Mrs May told the News: “I recognise people from all communities in Northern Ireland want to know what the UK’s exit from the European Union means for them,.

“The views of the people of Northern Ireland are hugely important to me, and to the whole of the UK, and that’s why I want to respond to your questions.”

The contributors of the six questions selected will each receive a Brexit cartoon signed by News political cartoonist Ian Knox.
