Daily office set for demolition as council approves regional publisher’s plan

A former newspaper office is set for demolition after planning chiefs gave a regional publisher’s hotel and student flats scheme the green light.

Coventry City Council has given Trinity Mirror the go-ahead to redevelop the Coventry Telegraph’s former Corporation Street home.

The paper was based at the site for more than 50 years before moving to its current Canal Basin home in 2012.

An application submitted to the council by TM, which owns the Telegraph, proposed demolishing existing buildings and replacing them with a 1,500 sq mixed use development.

It would include a hotel which could have up to 250 bedrooms, up to 385 bedrooms of student accommodation, up to 84 apartments and office space of up to 400 sq m.

The proposal also includes car parking for up to 166 cars.

A planning officers’ report states: “The proposal is high quality design improving the character of the area and will contribute positively to the visual amenities of the area whilst representing an efficient use of a highly accessible brownfield site.”

The search for a developer to buy the site is now likely to commence after councillors’ approval.

I’ll be utterly heartbroken to see this old girl go. I knew every inch of this magnificent, purpose-built temple of our now dying industry.

I sincerely hope the demolition contractors are aware of all the secret cupboards and panels of the top floor where the old crystal and silver collections of the great Iliffe family were squirrelled away.

I remember when an old MD accidentally stumbled upon Lord Iliffe’s long-forgotten whisky collection after we discovered a hidden room. It wasn’t exactly a Howard Carter moment, but, at the time, it was an exciting discovery nonetheless.

    Darren Parkin.
