Newspaper marks 20 years since football club’s stadium move

A regional daily has produced a special publication to mark two decades since its patch’s main football team’s stadium move.

Sunderland AFC moved from their Roker Park home of 99 years to the Stadium of Light in 1997, and the Sunderland Echo has marked the milestone.

The Echo has produced its ‘Ha’way back when’ 20th anniversary special, which features memories of the new stadium.

Among those to be interviewed were former club captain Kevin Ball, former chairman Bob Murray and striker Kevin Phillips.

As part of the special, the Echo asked readers to vote for their favourite players in every position to create the best ever Sunderland team to have played at the stadium.

Thousands of readers responded, and the resulting team is now available to view on the Echo’s website.

The 48-page supplement is on sale now, priced at £1.
