Weekly reporter scoops media awards hat-trick

A weekly newspaper reporter scooped an awards triple at a ceremony honouring the best in Welsh journalism.

Chris Betteley, of the Cambrian News, was named Journalist of the Year at the Wales Media Awards, as well as picking up the Print News Reporter and Political Journalist of the Year accolades.

Other winners included the Carmarthen Journal, which won Weekly Newspaper of the Year, and the Western Mail, which took best Daily or Sunday Newspaper.

For the second year in a row the Caerphilly Observer was awarded Independent Community News Service of the Year, complimented by the judges as “a standard bearer for the need to ensure all communities are represented by vibrant and strong media outlets.”

The judges said of Chris: “Journalism at its best – tenacious and showing a willingness to take on authority, while he won the political journalist award for his good, sound investigative work.

“A role model for the classic reporting that is the hallmark of great Welsh journalism.”

The ceremony was held on Friday in Cardiff, hosted by BBC newsreader Huw Edwards.

Feature Writer of the Year – Elin Llwyd Morgan, Cylchgrawn Barn

Business Journalist of the Year – Sion Barry, Media Wales

Political Journalist of the Year – Chris Betteley, Cambrian News

Online News Reporter of the Year – Cathy Owen, Media Wales
