Weekly polls readers on banning ‘cursed’ sports editor from football club

Glenn GarrettA weekly newspaper is polling readers on whether its sports editor should be banned from covering a football club on its patch.

The Kent & Sussex Courier is questioning whether Glenn Garrett should continue to be allowed to report on the fortunes of Tonbridge Angels FC, after being deemed “something of a curse” by his own paper.

The only victory Glenn, pictured left, has witnessed since November was the 4-0 thrashing of Leatherhead, but colleague Lee Wilmot was also there that day covering for sister paper the Leatherhead Advertiser.

The Angels currently sit third the Isthmian League Premier Division, at the seventh level of English football, and none of the four matches Lee has covered for the Courier without Glenn also present have resulted in defeat.

Another Courier journalist, Rob Warlow, has seen them win twice, while their biggest win of the season, 7-0 over VCD Athletic, was covered by Mark Ritson, who usually covers Crystal Palace FC for the Croydon Advertiser.

None of the other games covered solely by Glenn have resulted in victory for the Angels.

A poll has now been set up the the Courier’s website to allow Angels supporters to decide on whether he should be barred.

A piece accompanying the poll reads: “Garrett, who has followed Angels through thick and thin for nearly a decade, has become something of a curse in recent years

“Angels were not great last season, but when they went on a good run towards the end of the campaign, Garrett was always there whenever they lost.

“And this season the esteemed sports editor has not seen them win since the end of November, with Tuesday night’s defeat at home to Metropolitan Police the latest in a line of bad displays he has seen.”

Glenn is quoted as telling the Courier’s newsroom: “I think they’re worried, they clearly spot me in the press box before the game and feel under pressure.

“I’m seriously worried about the team making the play-off final. I won’t know what to do!”

Wilmot Spurs

Tottenham Hotspur supporter Lee also tweeted the Leicester Mercury with a link to the poll, adding a tongue-in-cheek suggestion that the paper should take on Glenn’s services for the remainder of the current Premier League season.

Leicester City currently sit five points clear of Tottenham at the head of England’s top division.
