Weekly chief sub bows out after half a century in industry

A weekly newspaper’s chief sub-editor has retired after more than half a century in journalism.

Stephen Taylor has left the Mid-Devon Advertiser, where he spent 42 of his 50 years in the industry.

Around 20 colleagues marked the retirement of Stephen, a noted railways enthusiast, by joining him on a surprise train journey on the South Devon Railway arranged by his partner Alison.

Stephen’s last day at work, 18 March, was 42 years to the day that he joined the Advertiser as chief reporter having previously undertaken reporting and sub-editing jobs in the West Midlands.

He said: “Somehow or other, the whole office had managed to keep the railway trip from me despite having had extensive emails between them and my partner.

“It was a wonderful surprise, and I have to thank them for the tremendous send-off they gave me.”

After joining as chief reporter in 1974, Stephen was promoted to sub-editor in Newton Abbot after several years and then became chief-sub editor, the title he held at retirement.

The surprise rail outing followed a presentation made by colleagues of cards, good wishes, retirement gifts and a standing ovation.

Advertiser editor Ruth Davey said: “The loyalty, and commitment Steve has given to the company during his four decades here, is immeasurable.”

Sir Ray Tindle, chairman of the Advertiser’s owner Tindle Newspapers, added: “We are most grateful for all Steve has done over the years and everyone is most appreciative of his dedication to bringing out our excellent paper every week.

“We all hope you have a happy retirement and please accept our thanks for all you have done.”

Well done, that man. I wonder how many of today’s subs (those that are left) will be marking their retirement in 42 years’ time? We all know the answer to that one, sadly.
