Marvellous. I’m overjoyed for the lads and lasses up the road at The Chron. With all these clicks, likes and tweets I feel a massive increase in paper sales is only round the corner.

I’m also pretty sure that the editor will be rewarding his internet-savvy staff with substantial pay rises.

Meanwhile in other news . . . the value of my Johnston Press share has slipped once again. A new record low again today at 28.5p. But never mind, Ashley promised us a few months ago that the company’s focus would be on the share price. I gave complete faith in Ashers and his team to turn things round.

No doubt some behind the scenes keyboard techno wizard will try to justify the importance of ‘reader engagement’ to justify their salary while all around the revenue losses increase, the copy sales continue to fall and businesses walk away to advertise elsewhere
….but at least they’ll be happy to be getting lots of ‘likes’ on Facebook when they announce the next set of ABC figures and half year financial trading picture

Not for Coventry Telegraph. Performance poor in last 12 months.

I’d like to see Alec Baldwin from Glengarry Glen Ross go into TM and give them hell.

‘Coffee is for people who sell advertising. Few years from now you’ll all be sat in a bar, bunch of losers, ‘Hey I had a 50% year-on-year increase in Facebook likes. Tough. You can’t play in the man’s game? Then hit the bricks pal, I’ve got no sympathy for you.’

Curious how this monthly announcement has provoked far fewer responses than it usually does, as if HTFP posters are wearied with saying the same old things. Harry Blackwood hits the nail on the head this time – with such positive figures it’s almost certain TM will use some of the massive amounts of extra wonga generated to reward those who make it all possible – the keyboard toilers and mouse-clickers still at a desk in the wake of the “ongoing restructure”.

Can HTFP ask some questions of the figures?

    – What are the returning visits on 30 day period?
    – What %age of the traffic is from Facebook?
    – What number of stories drove 33% of traffic, and what were they?

I think the answers would surprise many and open wider questions.

Perhaps insiders with the data could do some anonymous ‘meat on the bones’ posts with a view of helping the wider industry.

Off Spin – just had a look at the Coventry Telegraph’s numbers over the past year, and they’ve seen a sharp increase in the number of pages the typical user visits, a sharp rise in loyal users (those who return most often), a sharp rise in those who visit the Telegraph directly (landing on the home page or typing in the URL), huge growth in usage of the app (which generates the greatest loyalty in terms of pages per user, per month) and a very strong rise in the number of local people who follow them on social media.

So over the last 12 months, I’d say they’ve had a pretty strong year, and should be proud of their efforts.

What are the revenue figures for these websites? That is what we want to see. All this data reveals is that TM is giving away more content for free. Nothing more. Can’t wait to see LW sites figures next time round.
