University launches guide for journalists covering elections

A guide for hyperlocal journalists covering the forthcoming Welsh Assembly elections has been launched by Cardiff University.

The university has released the guide, which examines how journalists can report on the elections to the Welsh Senedd, pictured below, effectively and build engagement with their local community.

It provides information on topics such as media law, political polling data dissemination and tools on promoting articles and websites to readers.

Ideas from fellow journalists on the best ways to cover the election also feature in the booklet, produced by the university’s centre for community journalism and its Wales governance centre.

Emma Meese, manager of the centre for community journalism, said: “Hyperlocal coverage of the General Election last year was amongst some of the most innovative and engaging in the UK.

“We are delighted to showcase the fantastic work of community journalists and encourage more news providers here in Wales to cover the National Assembly for Wales Election.

“Community journalists play a vital role in promoting democratic participation and holding power to account. We hope this new guide will help even more community journalists in Wales to produce comprehensive news coverage of the upcoming election.”
