Regional daily serves up ‘Tripe’ for loyal football fans

Loyal followers of a regional daily’s football coverage were invited to see its sports reporters record a live version of their popular podcast.

The Teesside Gazette invited 70 readers to hear its journalists record ‘The Tripe Supper’, which discuss the fortunes of Middlesbrough FC.

The Gazette invited supporters who regularly interact with its ‘GazetteBoro’ social media channels to watch a live recording of the podcast, so-called because according to folklore the club itself was founded over a tripe supper in the 1870s.

Fans saw Gazette journalists Phil Tallentire, Dom Shaw, Jonathan Taylor and Anthony Vickers record the podcast in a pub before a lengthy question and answer session with the reporters and a challenging quiz set by statistician Shaun Wilson.

The evening was rounded off with a Teesside delicacy for supper – a breaded chicken cutlet known as a parmo.

The evening was organised by Gazette marketing manager Vikki Hawkins and social media editor Andrew Glover as a reward for the contributors who “provide a lively conversation around The Boro each day”.

Said Vikki: “This is the first event of its kind. We hoped it would be successful and we weren’t disappointed.

“The fans loved it, there was a great atmosphere and the reaction we have received has all been positive. It was best summed up by one fan who described it as ‘The Gazette at its very best.'”
