Regional daily produces special Remembrance edition

A special Remembrance Sunday edition of a regional daily which commemorates 100 years since the Battle of the Somme has gone on sale.

The Northern Echo has produced the 104-page special, which is being sold at £1 with 10p from every copy going to charity Help for Heroes.

The Echo has reproduced 15 of its front covers from 1916, the year of the Somme, to tell the story of life in the trenches and on the home front.

It tells the stories of North-East soldiers such as the Durham miner whose war is told in postcards sent back to his new wife, telling of cigarette shortages and his latest injuries.

Editor Andy Richards said: “The First World War touched every community and family in our region.

“The Battle of the Somme is seared into our collective memory like no other so we thought it appropriate to mark its centenary.

“This special edition is a way of honouring the sacrifice made by a previous generation while supporting today’s Armed Forces and their families by donating 10p from every copy sold to Help for Heroes.

“The response we have had from our readers and newsagents, as well as from veterans groups, has been very positive indeed.”

The edition went on sale on Sunday, and is dated until Remembrance Sunday.

In 2014, the Echo produced its first Sunday edition for 17 years to mark 100 years since the outbreak of the First World War.
