Regional daily marks 30 years since football club’s most famous win

A football club’s most famous triumph has been celebrated by a regional daily with a special 48-page supplement.

The Oxford Mail marked 30 years since Oxford United won the League Cup, known at the time as the Milk Cup for sponsorship reasons, with the supplement in yesterday’s newspaper.

The Mail also a blog on its website featuring real-time updates from 20 April 1986, when United defeated Queens Park Rangers 3-0 at London’s Wembley Stadium.

For the supplement, front cover pictured below, the Mail interviewed every Oxford player in the matchday squad, as well as the coach, manager’s son, and players that missed out.

The paper also fans that went the extra mile to be there on the day, as well as replicating every match report used in 1986 during United’s run to the final.

There was also an in-depth chat with television presenter and United fan Jim Rosenthal, who led ITV’s coverage of the final on the day and donned an Oxford horned hat while still on air.

Sports editor Mark Edwards and chief sports writer David Pritchard came up with the idea and did most of the writing, with valuable contributions from Jack Johnson and Neil Braggins.

It was then designed and put together by production editor John Carter, who came up with the idea of using the same fonts as the famous Panini sticker album from the 1986 World Cup in Mexico.

Said Mark: “Myself and David Pritchard started discussing the idea of a bumper supplement to mark the anniversary back in September.

“We decided if we were going to do it, we wanted to do it properly so set about mapping out a scheme that would cover every angle.

“With the great eye for design provided by John Carter, we are all very pleased with the end result, which has been extremely well-received by United fans.

“It is not often you get the chance to put together such a comprehensive supplement and although many, many hours of work was put in by all parties, the end result makes it all worthwhile.”
