Regional daily highlights issue of homelessness in week-long series

A regional daily has run a week-long series of stories highlighting the issue of homelessness on its patch.

The Herald, Plymouth, launched the Four Walls series after the city saw a spike in the number of rough sleepers on its streets over the past year.

The series began on Monday and is due to conclude today.

Chief reporter Sam Blackledge said The Herald wanted to draw attention to the “hidden story”.

He told HTFP: “Homelessness is always a talking point for local newspapers, and our investigation has uncovered a number of gripping and painful tales.

“There has been a worrying rise in the number of rough sleepers on the streets of Plymouth, and the city is trying to work out how to tackle this problem.

“Over the next few days we will visit a soup kitchen, hear from homeless war veterans, meet people recovering from life on the streets and look at the politics behind the issue.

“We hope our Four Walls series will draw attention to this hidden story.”
