Regional daily business magazine marks first anniversary

A regional daily’s business magazine is seeking to expand its operations after marking its first anniversary.

The Oldham Evening Chronicle launched Oldham Business Edge in June last year after receiving backing from a number of firms on its patch.

Now the Chronicle wants to expand the ‘Edge’ brand following the quarterly publication’s success, which has seen its print run increase from 2,500 to 3,000 in 12 months.

Managing editor David Whaley paid tribute to business editor Robbie MacDonald, who has headed up the venture and stresses the importance of photography to the magazine.

Oldham Edge

Said David: “We have been delighted by the way Oldham’s business community has welcomed the Edge product.

“Publications outside of the core newspaper are a vital way to tap into revenue streams from some businesses that work in national and international environments and have little need for ROP advertising in the local newspaper.

“The businesses that have backed this product realise they are doing their bit to support the local newspaper in the town whilst getting valuable profile in a product that is very positive and showcases Oldham to a wider audience.

“We brought Robbie MacDonald in to front this venture and his writing and organisational skills have made this a magazine that people want to read and want to be seen in.

“The key now is to expand the Edge brand to involve other projects within the business community in Oldham – and we would certainly welcome taking a business magazine model bespoke to other upwardly-mobile authorities. We have shown we can deliver.”

This publication looks to be floundering badly, so let’s call in Matt Kelly from Archant to sort it all out. That FP pic looks a bit expensive for starters so to save cash straight away I can nip out with my phone and snap a few women holding bits of material. My mum always said I was good with a camera. You’ve got to do these things right if you want to succeed.

The local PR companies and freelance snappers must love it…

Bet it’s filled with business press releases and sent-in pictures, with a few bits of comment chucked in.

Observer, as the editor of Oldham Business Edge magazine I can guarantee you that I have conducted the interviews and written-up the vast majority of the magazine’s content. Furthermore our Chronicle staff and regular freelance photographers take all the photos used in the magazine’s main articles and front covers. With respect, check your facts.
