Regional daily-backed charity appeal nears £21m target

A regional daily-backed appeal to raise £21m for a hospice is close to reaching its target.

The Glasgow Evening Times has been behind the ‘Brick by Brick campaign, which aims to build a state-of-the-art new home home for the city’s Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice, for the last four years.

The hospice, which cares for more than 1,200 patients and families each year, now needs to raise a final £2.8m to complete the appeal.

Among those to endorse the campaign has been TV presenter Carol Smillie, pictured below.

Hospice chief executive Rhona Baillie said: “When the Brick by Brick Appeal launched in September 2012 we asked the people of Glasgow to help us build their hospice and they didn’t let us down.

“The support from the city – and Glaswegians around the world – has been phenomenal. I still find it incredible to think that four years on we are now starting work on the site.”

She added: “At the moment we are trying to provide 21st century palliative care in a 19th century building – to continue to improve and expand our services we need space and up-to-date surroundings that only a new build can offer.”

It is hoped the hospice will move into the facility in 2018.
