Regional dailies celebrate weekend’s sporting success

Regional dailies marked sporting success on their patches as the English football season draws to its close.

The weekend saw promotion and relegation decided across the three divisions below the Premier League, with local newspapers covering the triumphs on their front pages yesterday.

Middlesbrough won promotion to England’s top flight after a seven-year absence following a draw with Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday.

The club’s 1-1 draw with Brighton & Hove Albion saw them go up ahead of the visitors to their Riverside stadium on goal difference, and prompted the below front page on yesterday’s edition of the Teesside Gazette.

The Oxford Mail produced 12 pages in yesterday’s newspaper covering Oxford United’s promotion, after 3-0 home victory over Wycombe Wanderers on the final day secured second place in League Two, the fourth tier of English football.

The Mail had five reporters at the game, with sports editor Mark Edwards, chief sports writer David Pritchard and sports reporter Jack Johnson dealing with the on-pitch success.

Georgina Campbell and Naomi Herring did sterling work with the fans, attending a pre-match barbecue with them more than three hours before kick-off, and running a live blog throughout the game before getting all the reaction after the final whistle.

Photographers David Fleming and Jon Lewis captured the celebrations, with John Carter then producing the below front page image of United skipper Jake Wright being held aloft by fans during the pitch invasion.

Said Mark: “It was a real team effort to produce such an amazing paper on Monday. We had every angle covered and are delighted with the end result – both on and off the pitch.”

The Mail now plans to produce a 32-page promotion supplement reviewing Oxford’s successful season, which saw them reach the Football League Trophy final at Wembley as well as beat Premier League Swansea City in the FA Cup.

The Burton Mail celebrated Burton Albion’s promotion to the Championship, England’s second tier, for the first time after hanging a giant banner from its offices before Sunday’s game against Doncaster which sealed their ascension.

The paper also ran a front page wrap marking the achievement, pictured below.

Elsewhere, the Bristol Post covered the promotion of Bristol Rovers to the third tier League One, including a round-up of the best celebration videos on its website.

Two fine examples of portraying emotion.
    Look and learn, Leicester Mercury.

I’ll second that @PROVINCIAL. The Gazette in particular is a shining example, with good photography being key.
