Regional copy-editor recognised at new talent awards

Marcin BryszakA copy-editor at a regional publisher’s production hub has won an award recognising new talent.

Marcin Bryszak, pictured left, who works for Newsquest in Weymouth, won the Most Promising Student of the Year (Undergraduate) award at the 2016 Professional Publishers Association’s New Talent Awards.

Polish-born Marcin, 22, began working for Newsquest after graduating with a first class degree in multimedia journalism from Bournemouth University in June.

Marcin received the award for, among other things, an investigation into the plight of children left behind in Poland while their parents migrate abroad and a data journalism investigation tracking the 2014 West African Ebola outbreak.

Said Marcin: “I am delighted to win this award. It is going to give me that extra bit of recognition needed in this industry.

“What I learned during the multimedia journalism course helped me in a big way because it gave me the skills, knowledge and experience to deal with every kind of story, on any platform. This was instrumental in winning this award and has helped me with my work at Newsquest, as every day I come across a wide range of topics and need to be able to deal with every one of them.

“Working as copy-editor has given me a fantastic grounding in the world of newspapers, the media and the fast-paced production environment. It’s great because you create headlines and prevent any errors from being published, while at the same time you find out what is happening locally, in the country and around the world before the public does.”

Newsquest regional production manager, Carl Blackmore, who runs the Weymouth hub, said: “We spoke to several universities/NCTJ accredited centres to offer an excellent opportunity for their graduates to use their qualifications and gain valuable experience within the industry.

“I am delighted that Marcin has won this award. It shows that Newsquest is a great place for a career in journalism to blossom.”

Surely an April Fool. Journalism is not sat in a hub doing headlines. It’s a shame as his credentials seem like he should be on a real newspaper. Hope he gets there and experiences what it really is like.

He’s a sub-editor, not a copy editor! The later phrase is in use in the States and Australia, I believe, but when it’s used here it denotes a degrading of the role. Oh…

Very well done, Marcin and all the best for the future.

(I expect someone so talented will be kicking the Newsquest dust off his feet pretty quickly and making a name for himself on the nationals.)
