Pro-independence daily marks second birthday with special edition

Pro-Scottish independence daily The National has run a souvenir birthday edition today marking two years since it first went to print.

The newspaper was brought out weeks after the 2014 independence referendum to serve as a voice for readers who voted in favour of Scotland leaving the United Kingdom.

The poster front cover on today’s issue shows the Scottish saltire made up from a collage of the almost 600 fronts the paper has produced in its two years in business.

The National has also announced the launch a series of roadshow across the towns and cities of Scotland with a live newsroom and evening events.

The tour will start in Inverness on 30 November, St Andrew’s Day, and will also visit Penicuik, Dunoon, Fort William and Fife.

Other locations are also being considered after readers requested visits for their town.

Editor Callum Baird said: “The National has exceeded all our expectations over the past year. The success of the paper is down to our very loyal readers, our excellent team of journalists, and the alternative voices of our columnists.

“We’re now doing what no other national newspaper does and taking our editorial floor out to towns and cities to further engage with the people of Scotland who want their voice heard.”

Richard Walker, founding and consultant editor of The National, said: “It’s difficult to believe that it was two years ago we published the first issue of The National. We remain overwhelmed by the support we receive from our readers, and the genuine affection they express for the newspaper.

“It is a privilege to be the only mainstream daily newspaper to represent the huge number of independence supporting Scots.”

Newsquest chief executive Henry Faure Walker added: “Whilst other daily newspaper launches have been gone, it’s great to see The National still going strong in print and online.

“Not bad for a publishing idea conceived with no market research in the back of a taxi en route to the airport on the eve of the Scottish referendum.   The Newsquest Scotland team have excelled themselves.”
