Olympic heroes honoured by city daily’s front page wrap

A city daily marked the return of its Olympic heroes with a front page wraparound.

The Yorkshire Evening Post ran the wrap, below, on Thursday after medal winners from the recent Rio Games were honoured with an open top bus tour through Leeds.

Triathlete champions Alistair and Jonny Brownlee, cyclist Ed Clancy, diver Jack Laugher and Paralympic winners Kadeena Cox and Hannah Cockroft were among those to be honoured.

The YEP covered Wednesday’s parade with a live blog on its website as well as on Facebook Live.

An editorial in Wednesday’s edition reads: “if you were among the millions who got caught up in the Olympic and Paralympic joy in the summer, then you will no doubt be part of the homecoming parade in Leeds today when the city gives thanks to the region’s heroes and heroines.

“We knew about the Brownlee brothers, Kadeena Cox, Jack Laugher and co before this summer but these games brought a whole new array of sports stars to public attention – and a range of unfamiliar sports, too.

“If their success doesn’t inspire a whole new generation of successful medal-challengers, then nothing will.

“It might seem a long, long time ago now but the bus parade in Leeds today is our chance to say thanks to the stars of the summer and acknowledge that we appreciate their efforts.”

Well done the staff who put this together, but what is the HTFP story? Newspaper covers big local news event. And? Pity the paper didn’t cover it on the day of the parade itself.
