Old badge puzzle sparks regional daily’s appeal to readers

A regional daily has asked for readers’ help to identify a series of old badges bearing its name.

The Huddersfield Daily Examiner has launched the quest after reader Mark Boswell found two badges bearing the newspaper’s name at the town’s open market.

A third blue badge, also featuring Examiner branding, has since been discovered in a desk in the paper’s newsroom, though no one knows what it was given out for.

One of the badges, pictured below, has been identified by former news editor Neil Atkinson as being used to promote a child safety campaign.

Neil, who retired earlier this year, told the Examiner: “There was a promotions department at the Examiner for many years and badges like the orange one were given out at the various galas and carnivals that the team attended.

“The Say No To Strangers was backing for a campaign I sorted. I was part of the Huddersfield Crime Prevention Panel and the newspaper supported a few projects.

“The dog was the Examiner Newshound – a lifesize mascot that toured schools.”

A piece appealing for information on the paper’s website adds: “However, even Neil, who had worked at the Examiner over the past five decades, didn’t know what the blue badge was for!”
