YouTube video recalls memories of defunct regional paper

A retired regional journalist has produced a YouTube compilation documenting his time at a now-defunct newspaper.

Stephen Clow has compiled a slideshow, which he has uploaded to the video hosting website, featuring his time at the West Herts & Watford Post.

Stephen worked at the Post as a sports and general reporter from 1967 until its closure in 1970.

He began working on the video while collating his extensive collection of local media memorabilia, where he rediscovered in his scrapbooks a feature on the Post from December 1968.

Written by fellow reporter Mike Walker, it highlighted the journalists on staff at the time and some of the stories they covered, including the collapse of a marquee roof at a jazz festival.

It also includes the letter sent to journalists announcing the paper’s closure on 21 May 1970.

Stephen, now 66, went on to work for the Essex Chronicle Series before taking voluntary redundancy in October 2012.

He has uploaded similar videos to YouTube from his time in Essex, under the title ‘The Old Chron’.

Said Stephen of his latest upload: “I have managed to ‘trace’ several former staff down thanks to Google, including Fleet Street legends, sports writer Kevin Moseley RIP and photographer Martyn Hayhow, but would like those still above ground to see the You Tube video.”

Nice piece of work. You’ve given me an idea too – a “where are they now” update on colleagues who featured in my video homage, “Channel M News – The Dream That Died”. In the meantime, here’s the original; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t7ExcScF5A0 .
