Journalists set for industrial action ballot over redundancy threat

Journalists at two sister newspapers could take industrial action in a dispute over compulsory redundancies.

The National Union of Journalists has notified Trinity Mirror of its intention to ballot members working at the Daily Record and Sunday Mail over possible action.

HTFP reported last month that up to 15 editorial jobs were at risk at the Glasgow-based titles as part of a restructure which would see their day-to-day operations merged.

A further seven are under threat at TM’s other regional newspapers in Scotland as part of the same plan.

NUJ Scotland posted on its official Twitter account: “Union heading for dispute with Daily Record over compulsory redundancy threat.”

The post added that members could be balloted this week.

However, the NUJ declined to comment or provide any further details when asked by HTFP.

A Trinity Mirror spokesman said: “We can confirm we have received notification from the NUJ of an intention to ballot members of the Daily Record and Sunday Mail chapel over industrial action. We continue to consult with staff.”

As part of the restructure, Brendan McGinty has become Mail editor and will also serve as deputy to Trinity Mirror Scottish nationals editor-in-chief Murray Foote, who currently runs the Record.

Brendan’s predecessor, Jim Wilson, took voluntary redundancy from the Mail last month after two years as editor, before the restructuring plans were announced.

Jim’s former role is not among the 15 put at risk by the plan.
