Independent publisher to revive fortnightly newspaper after buy-out

A fortnightly newspaper which hasn’t been printed for almost four months is being revived after being bought by an independent publisher.

The family-run Wythenshawe World, in Manchester, was last published in December after being founded more than 35 years ago by John Oatway.

Now the title has been bought by M&Q Media – publisher of the Stockport Mail, Cheadle, Gatley & Cheadle Hulme Mail, Heald Green Mail and Bramhall Mail.

Wythenshawe World will now return to its fortnightly publication frequency as a result of the purchase.

The newspaper’s website states it is distributed to more than 27,000 homes and business in South Manchester.

No jobs are affected by the purchase.

Mike Sheils, M&Q Media’s managing director, said: “It is a delight to own such a well-established newspaper.

“John Oatway and his family created the Wythenshawe World over three decades ago and made it a hugely successful newspaper and we have no plans to change its format in any way.”

    Arghh! My poor eyes!

Is that seriously what their front page looks like?

    Holy moly.

This newspaper is hugely appreciated in Wythenshawe. It’s liked by its many readers.
Who judges what makes a ‘good’ design?
A newspaper is a product and the readers are its arbitrators. Many newspapers who were so called ‘well designed’ went down the pan because their audience abandoned them. The Wythenshawe World gives their readers what they like not what high minded journalists think they should like. It’s a business were in and our readers pay our wages by responding to the advertisements.
No readers, no ads, no jobs.

I think they should have a few more ads on the front page

” Oatway and his family created the Wythenshawe World over three decades ago…..we have no plans to change”
Please rethink that guys as whilst its great to hear of a white knight coming in and saving an ailing title, that front page and the dreadful adverts look like they’ve been cut and pasted from the worst free sheets doing the rounds in the 80s.
I’ve looked on line and the rest of it is just as bad, if not worse.
I’m sure it was of its time when they launched it ,but that was thirty years ago and standsrds have risen and design and reader appeal are vital
If it’s worth saving it’s worth a total redesign as that’s just plain awful .

    Business is business
Readers and advertisers deserve better, what was acceptable in the 80s is almost an insult in 2016
Adverts need to get response for the business to spend hard earned money on theming to come back for more, there were nowhere near the number or quality of competitor publications back then that there are now and cramming the pages full of badly made up ads is not the way to get advertisers response or to get repeat business.
No advertisers, no revenues no jobs
