Former daily editor back in business with new launch

A former daily editor has been appointed to lead a new regional edition of a business magazine to be launched later this year.

Maria McGeoghan, pictured, left the Manchester Evening News in a restructure in 2012 and has since focused mainly on media consultancy and PR work.

Now she is to make a return to regional journalism as editor of a soon-to-be-launched North West edition of BQ magazine.

The appointment mirrors that of fellow former Trinity Mirror editor Paul Robertson, who became editor of BQ North East in July, five years after leaving Newcastle daily The Chronicle.

BQ – which stands for business quarterly – began life in the North East in 2008 and now has editions covering Scotland, the West Midlands, Yorkshire and London.

The North West edition, covering Manchester Liverpool, Lancashire and Cheshire, will launch in mid-November.

Said Maria: “The North West is thriving and every day I hear great stories about people and businesses who are determined to make their mark.

“I’m looking forward to telling those stories and uncovering some of the great entrepreneurship that is part of this region’s DNA. It’s exciting to be part of this new venture.”

Bryan Hoare, managing director of BQ, added: “Maria joins a highly respected and experienced team of editors across the UK and I’m delighted she is on board at such an exciting time for BQ.

“As we continue to grow as a national brand recognised for celebrating and inspiring entrepreneurship, her wealth of experience and profile across the North West will be invaluable.”

Another business publication! Just what the world needs.

Like all otter business titles I’ve ever read, it will be full of puff pieces from desperate PR wallahs, intermingled with barely interesting waffle that would never make it into the pages of any decent newspaper.

Well done to all concerned. Better than the dole I suppose.

Harry, business pubications for otters must be something unique to where you live – nothing dedicated to the furry animals in deepest, darkest surrey.

I have just returned from a most interesting meeting with the small business manager at my bank.

He looks very favourably on my proposal to open a business magazine for otters. He was especially impressed with my decision to open the first publication in Surrey.

Apparently web statistics glean by no less than Trinity Mirror suggest that interest for a business magazine among the Surrey otter community is abnormally high. Obviously reflecting the increasing number of otter startups in the area. The ‘Otter & ‘Otter Tea Rooms in Guildford being just one example.

This is a first rate opportunity for HTFP readers to invest their pension funds in what is certain to be a successful enterprise benefiting the whole otter community.

Cheques should be crossed and made payable to me at: The Acme Trust, the Cayman Islands Trust Bank, Fiddlers Road, George Town, Cayman Islands.

Ex UK provincial editors interesting in heading up these new publications should contact my lawyer: Charles Otterman c/o the same address.
