Football club’s march to Wembley prompts regional daily front

A moment of football triumph provided a regional daily with an eye-catching front page yesterday.

The Oxford Mail captured the delight of Oxford United supporters after their team won their way through to a Cup final at London’s famous Wembley Stadium.

United earned the right to play in the final of the Football League Trophy in April after beating Millwall over two legs.

The Mail ran six pages of pictures and reaction in its print edition, front page pictured below, coupled with online picture galleries and a live blog on the night.

Despite a 1-0 loss to Millwall on Tuesday night at United’s Kassam Stadium, a 2-0 victory at the reverse fixture in London ensure the club’s passage to Wembley.

Mail editor Gary Lawrence praised a “superb team effort” in putting the newspaper together.

He said: “Managing editor Sara Taylor, John Carter our head of production, sports editor Mark Edwards and sports sub Mike Knox take all the credit for look of the paper.

“We had sports reporter Jack Johnson and reporters Luke Sproule and Michael Race producing all the copy and David Fleming and Damien Halliwell providing the excellent pictures.

“It was a superb team effort from Oxford United and the Oxford Mail. Now we are looking forward to a fantastic day out at Wembley.”

United will now face either Barnsley or Fleetwood Town in the final of the competition, which is contested by clubs at the third and fourth levels of English football.

Blimey, you can tell Simon O’Neill’s no longer in the building with that front page, can’t you?
