Two former regional daily journalists have joined a communications and marketing agency in the North-West of England.
Pelican Communications, based in Saddleworth, near Oldham, has announced the appointment of Jessica Beckett and Joe Robinson to its team.
Jessica, 30, joins the company from the Trinity Mirror having worked in senior roles within the Manchester Evening News group of titles for more than seven years.
Originally from Rochdale, Jessica has served as both a reporter and deputy news editor during her time at the MEN. She will work across a number of key food, food service and logistics accounts, managing a small team of consultants.
Joe Robinson, also 30, worked for The Gazette, Blackpool and BBC Radio 4. Outside of journalism, he spent time in communications with Conservative MP for Fylde, Mark Menzies, and as a communications officer for Blackpool Council.
Oldham native Joe will work across a number of food, packaging and environmental sector accounts for Pelican.
Michael Bennett, Pelican managing director, said: “It’s great news for Pelican to have secured two of the region’s leading communications professionals.
“They both understand our key food, food service, packaging, environment and outdoor markets and have vast experience in both journalism and communications.
“In their short time with us so far they have hit the ground running and are already making good progress and serving our clients with distinction.
“I look forward to seeing them progress and help deliver Pelican’s motto of ‘driving brilliant results’ for our clients.”
Joe, left, and Jessica? Thanks for the steer.

Years ago, the Weekly where I worked had a front page picture of the Mayor and a chimpanzee complete with a left and right caption!

Not so fast, Spartacus. For a short spell, Jessica was a bearded hipster when the fashion for facial hair finally reached us in the northern shires, so many folk could well have mistaken Joe for her.

Well done both. Expect the trickle of journos heading for PR to explode into a flood as the fall-out from the various recent takeovers, mergers acquisitions etc hits critical mass.

Jessica was once a MEN, so the caption was necessary

Pictures should always be captioned left to right no matter who is on them. It’s a simple rule for photographers and saves the rest of us a lot of heartache. Don’t knock it.

Dear Suedehead
What are photographers ?
I wonder if ‘user generated content’ comes with a full caption ?

@Sammy Student, you’re quite right. Yet anoher pitfall ignored by swivel-eyed managers convinced of the benefits of free UGC…

Of course, Socrates would have questioned if the people depicted are Joe and Jessica at all. We only have the words in the caption to guide us and they are not implicitly verifiable in a theoretically analytic way. Interestingly, many years ago, when I wrote a philosophy column for a well-known title in the south east… (cont p97)
