Editor named among ‘most inspirational’ women by own newspaper

Jenny EastwoodA regional daily has listed its own editor as being among the most inspirational women in the county it serves.

The Citizen, Gloucester, ranked editor Jenny Eastwood, pictured left, as one of the 10 most inspirational women in Gloucestershire.

The list, compiled to mark International Women’s Day last week, also featured the likes of Princess Anne and Harry Potter author JK Rowling.

Bishop of Gloucester Rachel Treweek, the first female diocesan bishop in the Church of England, was also included, along with Labour peer Baroness Royall.

The entry for Jenny in the article states: “Jenny was just 33 when she was named editor of The Citizen in 2013, taking over from Ian Mean who had been at the paper’s helm for a decade. She joined the Citizen in 2005 on the newsdesk and also served as assistant editor.”

Jenny has declined to comment further on her inclusion in The Citizen’s list.

As reported on HTFP on Tuesday, The Scotsman also marked International Women’s Day by printing under the name ‘The Scotswoman’ for the day on Tuesday.

The newspaper had previously run under that title to commemorate the same occasion in 1995.

Can’t work out which is funnier – this self-serving inclusion or the time our MD was named number 3 in the Western Morning News’ Power 150! I mean, come on, even if you think the listing is deserved (and here the placement was about 799 places above where it should have been) for credibility’s sake, don’t publish it.

I once bought the rag some time ago. Can I be included in the top 10 readership section?

And how many women in Gloucestershire named her when asked to list their inspirations? If it was more than none, I’ll fricassee my homburg.

What’s the saying’ Self praise is no praise’
It’s no wonder she doesn’t want to comment but you’d think she’d be delighted to be included alongside so many notables and would have a word of appreciation for those who’ve put her in this top ten chart

However with no disrespect it can’t be a very long list can it

Is there anything worse than donning the robe of ‘inspirational’ in their communities albeit as nominated by themselves.

I recall a Norfolk based newsgroup listed the X most influential tweeters onTwitter in Norfolk and what a surprise all the editorial assistant deputy executive team leader editor types appeared on it,causing great hilarity amongst the county’s business and blogging communities.
Best leave the plaudits to others I say and get back to chasing those thousands of lost readers by turning round dwindling copy sales then showing us how its done, now that would be inspirational.

Who is truly inspirational anyway? In a journalistic sense there aren’t many around these days and most of them are probably banged up in prison or in exile.

Other than that, I can only think of William Shatner and maybe Socrates (the footballer)

I can only think it was someone else’s crazy idea and she didn’t know. That’s the only explanation. The editor of a tiny regional paper in the same list as Princess Anne and JK Rowling…..beggars belief.

I can think of a couple of inspirational people who i worked with who’ve left the regional press and started up very successful local newspaper and magazines in opposition. Both took risks, employed fellow ex RP staff and whilst facing the sniping of the big boys who tried all they could to close them down, failed and now have to watch as their star rises while their own falls at an alarming rate of knots.
Taking on an established yet complacent and ailing giant and stealing market share and business which was once taken for granted and making a success of it,now THAT’S inspirational

This has to be a joke. Being charitable, I can only assume it was published in error – a couple of weeks early!

Sorry but the days of any regional editor being seen as “influential” are long gone despite how self important most are and no doubt believing they are a voice to be listened to,they’re not, As the woeful ABC figures continue to show, they’ve lost their audiences ,they’re not the voice of the community and no one takes them seriously anymore.

I have to say, I think we’re being a touch harsh.

If I were a young female starting out in the still-male-dominated world of journalism, I’m sure I’d think a woman who became editor of a regional daily at 33 was pretty inspirational, no?

And, dare I say, there have been numerous male editors and regional editors, not to mention MDs, named in similar lists in the past and I can’t recall any stories like this being published… Just saying.

Absolutely hilarious. Dare i say editors usually write their website stories themselves.
