Daily says sorry for wrongly identifying teen as convicted drink driver

A regional daily has apologised for wrongly identifying a teenager as being a convicted drink driver.

The Press and Journal, Aberdeen, carrried a picture wrongly identifying a woman as Katherine Meaden, who was found guilty of drink driving this week.

The newspaper has since clarified that the woman pictured had nothing to do with Meaden, who crashed her car while nearly four times over the limit after a taxi failed to pick her up following a night out.

Meaden, 19, admitted the offence on Thursday at Aberdeen Sheriff Court, pictured below, with the newspaper’s clarification appearing on its website the following day.

It reads: “The Press and Journal carried a picture wrongly identifying a teenage woman as Katherine Meaden, who was found guilty of drink driving at Aberdeen Sheriff Court this week.

“The teenage woman pictured has no connection whatsoever to the case involving Katherine Meaden. We apologise to the family of the woman wrongly identified and for any distress our error has caused.

“The Press and Journal is committed to journalism of the highest standards and we aim to produce our newspaper with accuracy, honesty and fairness.

“Our journalists adhere to the DC Thomson company values of integrity and respect – and we abide by the industry’s own code of practice, known as the Editors’ Code, which is the foundation stone of the UK press self-regulatory system.

“It sets out the rules that newspaper and magazine industry members pledge to accept.”

Sheriff Morag Macdonald fined Meaden £750 and disqualified her from driving for 14 months.
