A weekly newspaper has celebrated success in two charity campaigns.
The North Devon Gazette, based in Barnstaple, succeeded in raising more than £31,000 for North Devon Hospice and Children’s Hospice South West in just six weeks.
The Gazette’s annual Light Up a Life campaign saw around 3,000 readers donate their cash via post, telephone or online.
Hundreds also attended 22 church services held in honour of the campaign across North Devon, where they lit a candle in memory of friends and family members.
The team at the Archant-owned title also delivered more than 300kg of stock to the food bank in Barnstaple in the run up to Christmas – including donations from staff and scores of generous readers who responded to the paper’s Give a Gift appeal.
Gazette editor Andy Keeble said this year’s Light Up a Life appeal had been one of the most successful in its 18-year history.
He added: “We are so privileged to be able to help spread the word about such a fantastic appeal for two local charities that are so dear to North Devon.
“And true to form, our generous readers have thrown their support at the appeal once more.”
Entirely off the point, but I was interested to see Archant’s North Devon Gazette masthead font is the same, or similar, to the JP stable of Gazettes at Shoreham and Littlehampton and the Heralds at Worthing and Lancing. I’ve seen a similar font elsewhere, too. I wonder how many papers use this font, what it is, and who started it?
