Ski magazine launched by ex-regional daily staffer

Katie CookesyA daily’s former deputy news editor has set up her own magazine aimed at snowbound tourists in the Alps.

Katie Cooksey quit her job at the BBC News Online to launch Tarentaise Source, an English language publication aimed at both holidaymakers and residents in French resorts.

Katie, pictured left, began her journalism career at the Crewe Guardian in 2005, moving on to The Sentinel, Stoke, where she served as deputy news editor, before spending time freelancing at the nationals ahead of her move to the BBC.

She got the idea for the magazine after attending a trade show in the Alpine town of Morzine last year, where her boyfriend Steve was exhibiting his architecture business.

The woman who ran the show also published a resort magazine called Morzine Source, which Katie believed she could expand to other resorts in the region due to her journalism experience and Steve’s knowledge of the local area.

Ten days later she left her job at the BBC and began selling advertising for the new venture, with the first edition of Tarentaise Source going to print in November.

Said Katie: “Becoming my own boss and editor of my own magazine has been a thrilling ride, from starting to sell advert space and persuading businesses to get on board, to interviewing celebs and uncovering new stories about the area and being responsible for layout and design.

“Now I spend a lot of my time in a beautiful mountain ski resort, I’ve made incredible new friends here and get the chance to travel, as much of my work can be done from anywhere with an internet connection.”

She now hopes to launch a separate magazine for the resort of Paradiski later this year.

‘I’ve made incredible new friends here….’ I wish my friends were a bit more incredible. Sadly, they’re a pretty average lot, by and large. Perhaps I should uproot and head for the Alps in search of new, more incredible ones.

Is she holding up a front page or about to tuck into a pizza ? This is where the skills of a professional photographer might have been useful. Good luck with the project anyway.

No, Onlooker, you need to meet some amazing ones, another much misused adjective, though you’d think a professional journalist would be more careful with her words. Still, it doesn’t phase me one little bit really.

Onlooker & PageTurner – you are a pair of miserable cynical saddos. Can’t you just applaud a young person’s entrepreneurial spirit & guts in going for it themselves?

Best of luck to you Katie. Running your own business is a bit like skiing – you’ve just got to pick yourself up & go again after the wipe-outs. Go for it, keep your confidence high & enjoy the ride.
