Seven to do battle for regional production award

Seven daily titles will battle it out for the top regional prize at a set of awards dedicated to excellence in print and digital production.

The newsawards 2015, previously known as the Newspaper Awards, aim to celebrate the best in print, digital and business innovation across regional, national and international titles.

The shortlist was unveiled today with seven regional newspapers contending for the title of regional daily newspaper of the year.

They are the Cambridge News, Eastern Daily Press, Hull Daily Mail, Leicester Mercury, Dundee-based The Courier, The News in Portsmouth and The Press & Journal in Aberdeen.

The winners of the 19 categories will be announced at a ceremony in London on 29 April, which will be hosted by comedian Al Murray.

Weekly newspapers which will compete to be named the best in their section are the Bath Chronicle, Cornish Guardian, Ham & High, Isle of Wight County Press, Medway Messenger, The Cumberland News and The Impartial Reporter.

Now, in their 19th year, the revamped awards have been divided into three distinct sections – print, digital and business.

The Fujifilm Grand Prix award recognises those who have succeded across all three areas and will see the Eastern Daily Press and Newsbury Weekly News compete with The Guardian, The Independent and Trinity Mirror for the prize.

Gary Cullum, director of newsawards, says: “2015 has seen a complete revamp of the awards which have a fresh new image, a new format and a new venue. The new format divides the awards into three distinct sections: print, digital and business.

“The standard of entry has been exceptional and we are now beginning to see clear evidence of how the industry is facing up to achieving success in these evolving and challenging times.

It’s not simply a question of print versus digital, it’s about developing creative, commercial and innovative solutions designed to make the two work together to succeed into the future.”
