Schoolboy murder prompts regional daily special edition

The murder of a schoolboy found dead in a graveyard prompted a regional daily to produce a special afternoon edition.

Carlisle’s News & Star published the late final edition yesterday to update readers on the inquiry into the death of 14-year-old Jordan Watson in the city.

Jordan’s body was discovered in a cemetery on Tuesday morning, which provided the splash for yesterday morning’s edition of the CN Group-owned paper.

A post-mortem examination found he died from multiple wounds to the head and neck caused by a sharp implement.

Reporters were on the patch from early morning on Wednesday and when police revealed there had been an arrest, the decision was made to go back onto the press with a special, updated edition at 11.30am.

The updated edition, pictured below, went on sale at 1.45pm yesterday.

Associate editor Anne Pickles said: “That’s the advantage of printing on site and of having a team of great reporters and subs with sound local knowledge and trusted contacts in their community.

“We were reporting on our website and on social media too, of course. But print is equally as important to Cumbrian Newspapers.

“Our readers expect us to keep them well served on important stories.”

An 18-year-old man from Carlisle has been arrested in connection to the investigation.

Detectives say the man was known to Jordan.

Well done News & Star. How refreshing it is to say this during such a trying time for the industry. And the comment by Anne Pickles says a lot.
